Cake Stand

IMG_6064

A client recently asked me to make a wedding cake stand that would hold a three-tiered cake. I wanted the piece to be sturdy and multi-functional, so that after the wedding, she’d be able to use it again.  One hit wonders (“Tubthumping,” anyone?) may be great in the music industry, but I enjoy knowing that my items will get a lot of use. Come to think of it, I’m sure Chumbawamba also hoped they’d have more than a single hit on the charts…

The black walnut slab is supported by a three log base and log slices. Felt footies offer protection on table surfaces. Ivy is wrapped around the columns, adding a touch of softness to the rustic design.

The walnut slab is treated with three coats of food-grade mineral wax, keeping the sheen down for wedding photos but also making it an option for a unique cheese board for the client in the future.  The plate pictured above is a 12″ serving plate.
